Title:
Humans as Cultural Animals: Implications for Psychological Diversity Between East and West (and Globalization)

Abstract:
As a cultural psychologist, my research examines cultural differences in motivation, emotional experience, and attentional styles. The ways in which these cultural differences in basic mental operations are implicated in how happiness and anxiety manifest differently across cultures will also be discussed. Finally, I will also discuss my recent research on the psychological consequences of globalization in Japan. This research tries to understand youth problems in Japan such as NEET, Freeter, and Hikikomori from a cultural psychological and globalization perspective. Through my talk, it is my hope that students will understand how culture plays a central role in the human experience and human diversity, as well as how external pressures from globalization can disrupt the relationship between culture and society with young people caught in the middle.
